Wish List December 23, 2008

The most recent issue of ReadyMade magazine had a neat article where they asked art/design/craft bloggers what would be on their ultimate, money-is-no-object holiday wish lists.

So I’m joining in the fun–and I had intended to post this much earlier in the hopes that you might get some gift ideas for your friends and family (particularly #3 and #8, which are actually affordable). Might be something to keep in mind for their birthdays or even next Christmas.

1. A new dining table made by my super talented woodworking friend Jason Bickell. Especially one in this style, with the multicolored wood slats.

2. One of Randy Gachet’s birds, sculpted from wire and tire treads, whirling around the ceiling at Bare Hands Gallery.

3. Memberships to any of our fine local cultural attractions, including Vulcan Park, Sloss Furnaces, and the Birmingham Zoo.

4. A spot in the upcoming stained-glass class at the Birmingham Museum of Art.

5. And for that matter, spots in any letterpress-printing or screenprinting classes around town.

6. Prints! Particularly pieces by classic Birmingham printmaker Frank Hartley Anderson and the students in local high school art classes in the 1930s. Soon I’ll do a post about their work that I’ve seen on the Birmingham Public Library’s Web site–it’s great stuff!

7. A giant piece of art by Karin Olah. Seriously, my walls need one of these.

8. A gift certificate to a collection of Birmingham restaurants. Scroll down the front page of Bhamdining.com, and you’ll find info on these group gift certificates, which are a spectacular idea. There are four delicious groups to choose from.

9. And last–but most expensive, naturally: a studio! I need a large, light-filled space to create art and store all the materials–preferably attached to the place I live. I’d take most of the art/craft/design spaces profiled here!
