Heating Up May 27, 2008

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day. I did not spend mine stuffing my face with gelato, thank you. (Barbecue and pie are another matter!) But I was working on some new art pieces for an upcoming event. In fact, there are lots of interesting upcoming events to heat up your calendar and get summer going:

May 31–Cahaba Lily Festival
I’m thinking about driving down to West Blocton this Saturday to attend the Cahaba Lily Festival, which features field trips to see the lilies in full beautiful bloom on the shoals of the river. The lily is very rare, so seeing them–and especially so many of them in one spot–is pretty much an only-in-Alabama experience. More details on the festival are here.

June 6–Dobbs Gallery Grand Opening
Downtown gets an all-new art gallery devoted to cool contemporary art, featuring several nationally known artists whose work is new to Birmingham. You can meet some of those artists–and the friendly owners–at the grand opening reception, which lasts from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The new space is located at 2013 2nd Ave. N.

June 7–The Literacy Council’s Downtown Loft Tour
I love this event, because I enjoy seeing just how creative people can get with their loft and condo spaces. This year we’ll finally get a look inside the City Federal Building and Athens Flats, along with plenty of other fascinating spaces. For details and ticket info, visit the Literacy Council’s site.

June 12–Junior Patrons Event
The Junior Patrons of the Birmingham Museum of Art are hosting a wine tasting and art viewing at the Village Wine Market in English Village. I’ll be showing some new one-of-a-kind pieces (like this one)–and debuting a brand-new print–and talking about my work, along with two or three other Naked Artists. You don’t have to be a Junior Patron to attend this event. Come see us, enjoy some art and wine, and learn more about the group. I’ll post more details about this event on this blog as I get them.

June 13-14–“Retropolis” Opens at Naked Art
Meet retro-pop artist Delaine Derry Green and see her fun, colorful, creative creations, inspired by midcentury fashion, in her first solo show. See Naked Art’s site for details.

June 21–Red Mountain Park Tour
Don’t miss this one! Sign up now at the Friends of Red Mountain Park site.
