Holiday Coolness November 27, 2007

Let’s face it–a lot of “holiday spirit” is slick, mass-produced stuff you can find in any city. But this weekend you have two chances to enjoy the holidays in uniquely Birmingham ways.

On Dec. 1 and 2, the always festively decorated Bottletree is hosting a holiday craft bazaar, featuring handmade goodies from local artists and designers. Going to Bottletree sure beats going to the mall, don’t you think? Check the site for times.

Also on Dec. 2, my friends at Sloss Furnaces are filling the afternoon with events, beginning with a holiday iron pour. Go carve into a sand mold, watch the metal lava flow, and get totally, completely hooked! (OK, maybe that last part was just me, but I promise you’ll enjoy watching it.) And later on, for the first time ever, they’re going to light the Sloss water tower for the holidays and show the movie The Polar Express under the 1st Avenue viaduct. That’s certainly something you won’t see anywhere else! Movie and lighting are free, and it’s $20 to carve a mold for the pour. Visit the Sloss site for specifics on times.

And this isn’t a holiday event, but next Tuesday at Workplay, the founders of Found and PostSecret will share new random discoveries and secret postcards–and somehow music is involved as well. If you haven’t yet discovered these Web sites, be prepared to spend hours on them when you do. They’ll draw you in and keep you. For more info on the event and to get tickets, scroll to the bottom of this page or visit Workplay’s site.
