Fiesta This Friday! October 30, 2007

I’m still creating holiday goodies–but I’m nearly done, and soon I’ll deliver them to Naked Art. Go ahead and mark your calendar for Friday, November 16. That’s the gallery’s famous and fun Kitschmas opening, and the place will be packed with lots of creative, affordable gift ideas. (Vero already has a gift guide online if you want to get a head start.)

Now, on to the pressing issues: This Friday is the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) event at Bare Hands Gallery, and you should NOT miss it. For me this has become one of the events that puts the magic in our Magic City. It’s a wonderland of exotic, spontaneous, and heartfelt creativity–not to mention visual overload. The party lasts from 3:00 p.m. to midnight, with music, food, art, peoplewatching, fire pits, and a procession around the block that’s unlike anything you would imagine seeing on the streets of Birmingham. That same night, over at Nordys Gallery (a friendly, unpretentious gallery I recently visited for the first time), painter Megan Kimber is having a reception for her first Birmingham show. Her work is imaginative and fantastical, and just about everyone who sees it is impressed–or left dreaming up a story to fit the images. You can preview her work at her site, but the paintings look even more vibrant in person. Nordys is located on 3rd Ave. S., just a few blocks from Bare Hands, so stop by and meet Megan on your way to or from Day of the Dead. Her reception lasts from 6:00 to 9:00.
