Never Too Early for the Weekend October 1, 2007

It’s Monday–but I’m already ready for another weekend. And this one involves some intriguing art activities.

Friday night, from 5:00 to 8:00, Birmingham-Southern College’s art gallery is hosting an opening for painter Lisa Michitti–and outside, Sloss Metal Arts will be doing an iron pour, which longtime readers of this blog will know that I highly, HIGHLY recommend seeing. I imagine you’ll be able to scratch designs into sand molds and make your own metal tile.

That same night, Naked Art is opening “Revive!”–a show featuring two artists who work with recycled materials. One of them, Melissa Jones, is enjoying a revolutionary evolution of her style, and the results are amazing. Lots of people do mixed media collage pieces, but few do it well, and I doubt you’ve seen anything like Melissa’s magazine-advertising/photo/paint/wood/graphic/text creations.

And Saturday, of course, is the annual Bluff Park Art Show in Hoover. Personally, I have mixed feelings about that show, but I’ll most likely go. If you go, stop by the booths of Debra Riffe, another local block printmaker (they’re rare!), and Laura Lockhart, who goes on exotic trips and turns them into art.

And while you’re planning weekends, go ahead and mark your calendar for the can’t-miss Kentuck festival down in Northport–October 20-21!
