Sidewalk in Sight September 24, 2007

So much going on this weekend. The delicious Greek food festival on the Southside. The Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival, which has a *great* advertising campaign going this year. But the big draw for me is the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival.

What are you going to see? I know I’m not going to miss Lunch, a short–and the first film–from James Brown, godfather of soul…or a close facsimile. James is a friend of mine, and I’m so so proud of him for creating a festival-worthy film. I can’t wait to see it. This film also marks the first silver-screen appearance for one of my artworks. Look for a magnet with a rocket print somewhere in the background. (Alabama Shorts Block 2, Sat., 6:30 p.m., Alabama Power)

In that same block, my friend Sam Frazier Jr. debuts From the Files of a Very Concerned Psychologist. I don’t know much about the film, but Sam is a seasoned filmmaker (his last work was a mini stop-motion epic starring Lego figures), so it’s going to be good.

Actually, seeing any of the four blocks of Alabama shorts is a good bet. The depth of moviemaking interest and creativity in this area will surprise you.

And two films I’m curious about:
The Ten: The opening night film, a comic reinterpretation of the Ten Commandments, sounds intriguing and has an interesting cast. But the movie is only part of the attraction for me. I love the atmosphere in the Alabama Theater on the opening night of Sidewalk. (8:00 p.m., Fri., Alabama Theater)
Strictly Background: A documentary feature about the lives and times of movie extras. (11:15 a.m., Sat., Alabama Power)
