Calling All Inventors August 8, 2007

“The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”

I saw that quote in last week’s Birmingham Weekly. It’s credited to Alan Kay, and I’m not sure who he is, but it’s brilliant. And very appropriate to Birmingham these days. At this time, in this place, we can *do* things that actually make a difference–things that both celebrate and improve B’ham. You don’t have to look far to find examples.

And the opportunities to get involved just keep coming. Right now, for instance, Artwalk needs volunteers. This is a great way to get involved with the cool, doing-things people as well as the art community–plus if you’re interested in applying to Artwalk next year, I highly recommend being a volunteer to get an idea of how the artists set up things, operate, etc. It was an immense help for me.

Volunteering at Artwalk is quite a lot of fun, plus you’ll get invited to the after-party at Sloss Furnaces, which I’m already looking forward to. And it’s possible to both attend Artwalk and volunteer at it–just do your volunteering and browsing/buying on separate days.

Now that I’ve hopefully sold you on the idea, check out Artwalk’s volunteer page to see what you can do, what’s involved, how to sign up–and how you can help invent a vibrant arts scene and exciting city.
