Next time you’re on 2nd Avenue North, check out the facade of Athens Flatts. See the “Athens” name in metal up there? It came directly from the previous incarnation of the building. I love that they kept it–and not only that, but they had the “Flatts” sign done in a similar typeface. Now if they would only spell “flats” correctly–and tell me what happened to the glorious metal screen that used to adorn the facade of the previously hideous building. :)

And while you’re on 2nd Avenue, please go check out What’s on 2nd. I thoroughly enjoyed myself at its opening a couple of weeks ago. It’s an amazing addition to downtown, a perfect complement to Reed Books on the next street over, and an only-in-B’ham instant classic. It’s a postcard wonderland–I mean, they’re literally *everywhere*, but don’t miss the other vintage paper items, from airline luggage tags to matchbooks, brochures, and valentine cards. Then there’s the vintage furniture and knick-knacks, kitschy old art, and just random odd stuff. It would take hours to look at everything on all three levels of the place. Be sure to check out the prints derived from vintage postcards on the third level. It’s an inexpensive way to collect a lot of images of old Birmingham.
