New Work, New Spot June 20, 2007

I’ve now got some large wood wall pieces in another Birmingham location: the Southside Roly Poly restaurant.

One of them–“Cold Comfort”–I’m especially proud of. The “It’s Cool Inside” print is based on an archive photo of the Alabama Theater; the “Cool” circle was part of the marquee, tempting potential audiences with the promise of relief from B’ham’s summer heat in the days before home air conditioning. The “Polarized” print is pretty recent, too, though it comes from a fading painted sign on the side of a dry cleaning place in Ensley. People used to take their fur coats there for cold storage in the summer, hence the polar bear.

The Roly Poly pieces–like my work at Lucy’s Coffee and Tea–are for sale through Naked Art. You can also see them on my page at Naked Art’s Web site.
