Here We Go Again April 29, 2007

Bettye Fine Collins, president of the Jefferson County Commission, is after the Cultural Alliance again. The county is apparently strapped for money (perhaps from approving the spending of tens of thousands of dollars on office furniture when the new commissioners took office last year?), and she wants to swipe $5 million from the Cultural Alliance. In the news, she said the arts were all “feel-good” things that weren’t essential.

Sigh. When will they learn that a vibrant arts community *draws* people and businesses to the county? Do they want an economic and social wasteland? The Cultural Alliance is quite a cool concept, and it has promoted the growth of arts organizations and events in the metro area–and best of all, it’s propelled by the citizens themselves, since they help approve the funding that the Alliance grants.

So, what do we do now? Our response helped convince the County Commission to support the parks last time. It’s time to e-mail the commissioners again–or you can go here to mass-mail them. (I’m not so fond of the form letter method myself, but I’ll go with whatever works.) Let’s see what we can do!
