Radio Static November 29, 2006

Things are still wildly busy–I promise I’ll return to regular posting soon–but today I had to bring up the demise of alternative radio in Birmingham. That’s right–if you haven’t heard the news, the X at 100.5 is signing off the air today to be replaced by *sports talk*. Ugh! That means the only types of music you can hear on the air in B’ham now are lots of country, oldies/soft rock, teen pop, and urban.

Even more tragic, though, is that we’ve lost the three-hour edition of Reg’s Coffee House. No more radio show devoted to singer-songwriters here. The X was his home/flagship station. This is his home market. (Reg says the syndicated one-hour show will still be airing–on stations not in this market–and on his Web site.

Unbelievable. And the radio companies wonder why people are flocking to Sirius and XM.
